Create your own pair of cosy LATVIAN FOLK SONG Mittens with this detailed, easy-to-follow knitting pattern.
Inspired by traditional Latvian mitten designs, this pattern has been thoughtfully adapted for today’s knitter. The colourwork follows a Fair Isle principle (no more than two colours per row), uses fewer stitches, and allows for a slightly larger needle size — making the knitting experience smoother while preserving the spirit of the original motifs.
What You’ll Need
- Double-pointed needles or circular needles (approx. 2 mm–2.5 mm, depending on your knitting tension
-
4-ply yarn (approx. 100g / 350m total) in four colours. Select from our 25g mini skeins (browse colours here) to recreate the original look, or substitute with any comparable 4-ply natural fibre yarn.
In the original design, I used:
- Anthracite as the main background colour
- Grey as the primary contrast colour
- Red for the small, bright accent dots
- White as the background colour for the cuff pattern
You are very welcome to adapt the palette to suit your own taste. However, for the design to work harmoniously, I recommend following these principles:
· The main background colour should be darker than the main contrast colour.
· The small decorative accent colour works best when it is fairly bright.
· The cuff background colour should be lighter than both main body colours.
This balance helps the motif stand out clearly while preserving the harmony of the overall design
